When I was a kid, a jar of apple butter in the fridge was a sure sign that fall had arrived. It was my Dad’s favorite. The smells and the feels really remind me of childhood and of home. This Instant Pot Apple Butter lets me savor those delicious memories all over again.

Smooth and velvety, it’s made with whole ingredients and is naturally gluten free, dairy free and vegan. And it will fill your home with aromas that are better than any candle.

What’s in homemade apple butter

If you’ve recently gone apple picking, you’re going to love this recipe. It’s a great way to use up those apples! Here’s what you’ll need:

  • apples (my favorites are Fuji, Winesap and Honeycrisp)
  • granulated sugar
  • brown sugar
  • cinnamon
  • nutmeg
  • cloves
  • allspice
  • salt
  • lemon juice

This recipe calls for 6 pounds of apples, which will give you 6 cups of homemade apple butter. If it’s too much, just cut the recipe in half.

How to make Instant Pot Apple Butter

Once you peel and chop the apples, your Instant Pot will do the rest of the work. Dump all of the spices in with the apples. Then, just let the aromas of cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg fill your home for the rest of the day. It’s totally awesome.

I like to check on the apples every two or three hours, give them a stir, and then leave them alone again. Once the apples turn very dark in color and the liquid is reduced by about half, you’ll know it’s time. If you have an immersion blender, you can puree the apples right in the Instant Pot. If not, just transfer them to a food processor and process until they reach a velvety texture.

In about 8 hours, you’ll have a big ol’ pot of smooth, sweet & tangy apple butter – plenty to give as gifts and to keep for yourself. Stored in an airtight container, this Instant Pot Apple Butter will last all season in the fridge.

How to serve Apple Butter

These days, I have gotten a bit more creative with my canvas for apple butter (although my dad still sticks to white toast or saltines). Here are some of my favorite ways to enjoy my stash of homemade apple butter:

A jar of instant pot apple butter
  • Bake it into muffins, breads and donuts
  • Spread it onto scones or challah toast
  • Mix it into cocktails
  • Add it to a cheese board
