Rich, creamy and packed with flavor, it’s one of our favorite appetizers. This spinach dip is always a big hit for game days, get togethers and holiday parties.
Made with three different melty cheeses, it bakes up golden brown and beautiful every time.
Fair warning, you might want to make a double batch of this one!
Ingredients
- Fresh spinach
- Cream cheese
- Parmesan cheese
- Mozzarella cheese
- Sour cream
- Garlic
- Salt

How to Make Hot Spinach Dip
Saute the Spinach
Start by roughly chopping the spinach. Then, saute it over medium-low heat along with the garlic until it wilts. This should only take 2-3 minutes.
Now, set the spinach aside.

Combine the Dip Ingredients
In a mixing bowl, stir together the softened cream cheese, grated Parmesan cheese, sour cream and salt.
Now, squeeze out any excess water that may be left in the spinach (there shouldn’t be much) and fold it into the cream cheese mixture.
Bake the Dip
Transfer everything to a baking dish and sprinkle the mozzarella in an even layer over top.
Now, bake it until it’s golden brown and bubbly.

Variations
There are so many different ways to customize this classic recipe. Here are some popular additions and modifications:
- Spinach artichoke dip: A classic for a reason! Add a can of chopped artichoke hearts for a briny upgrade.
- Healthier spinach dip: Use neufchatel cheese instead of cream cheese, Greek yogurt instead of sour cream and reduced-fat mozzarella instead of full fat mozzarella to save some calories.
- High protein spinach dip: Stir in shredded cooked chicken to increase those macros.
- Crunchy spinach dip: Stir in a can of chopped water chestnuts. They’re a favorite in cold spinach dip recipes, and they add an awesome crunchy component to hot dips as well.

Storage Instructions
Store leftover spinach dip in an airtight container or cover it with plastic wrap. It will stay fresh in the fridge for up to five days.
To reheat, the microwave works just fine in this case. Of course, you can also reheat it in a warm oven or on the stove top over medium heat.
Can I use frozen spinach in this recipe?
You sure can. Frozen spinach is often more convenient and less expensive than fresh spinach.
However, frozen spinach has a higher moisture content than fresh spinach. So, be sure to thaw it and squeeze out as much liquid as possible using paper towels.
This is a key step in avoiding a watery dip.

Can I make this dip ahead of time?
Absolutely! For best results, assemble this cheesy spinach dip ahead of time and store it covered with plastic wrap in the fridge.
Let it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes before baking.
It’s a great way to plan ahead for game days and parties.
Can I freeze hot spinach dip?
While I recommend enjoying this cheesy dip fresh or out of the fridge, it is possible to freeze it. But keep in mind the texture may change slightly due to the dairy separating.
Store it in an airtight container and thaw it overnight in the fridge before reheating. You may want to add a splash of milk to help reconstitute the texture during reheating.
