Sipping a hot toddy may be the only thing I sort of enjoy about being sick. But since I enjoy them so much, I’ve started drinking hot toddies even when I’m well.
They’re so cozy on a cold night! And once you see how easy they are to make, you might be whipping them up more often too.
What’s a hot toddy (and why do we drink it when we’re sick)?
The classic hot toddy has a rich history that dates back to the 18th century. Originating in Scotland, the traditional hot toddy was initially concocted with just hot water, sugar, and spices to make the harsh taste of Scotch more palatable.
Over time, it evolved into the comforting beverage we know today, often recommended as a remedy for colds and flu.
The combination of warm liquid, soothing honey, and a splash of spirit not only warms the body but is also believed to provide relief from common cold symptoms.
The hot tea and honey provide natural relief for coughs and sore throat, while the bourbon helps to relax the body so it can get the rest that it needs. Fresh lemons add a kick of vitamin C, an immunity booster.
Ingredients for this Hot Toddy Recipe with Bourbon
Here’s what you’ll need to create the perfect cocktail for boosting your immune system:
- Black tea. Rich in antioxidants, black tea also contains an amino acid called L-theanine which helps to calm the body and reduce cortisol (stress hormone) levels.
- Honey. Go for a local honey or raw honey, one that you’re sure is pure and unfiltered.
- Bourbon. You could also opt for Irish whiskey, depending on your taste preference.
- Lemon. Just a squeeze of fresh lemon juice helps to balance the other flavors.
How to Make this Hot Toddy Tea Recipe
The first step in making this classic hot cocktail is to boil your water in a tea kettle or small saucepan. Then, pour it into your favorite mug. Steep the tea bag for about 5 minutes and then remove it.
Stir in the honey, bourbon and fresh lemon juice. Now, let the healing begin!
Variations on this Hot Toddy Bourbon Tea Recipe
1. The Tea. In addition to black tea, different tea options are green tea (which is also high in amino acids) or herbal tea like chamomile tea. Herbal tea is nice as a caffeine free option.
2. The Bourbon. Depending on your preferences, you might want to try dark rum, spiced rum or Irish whiskey.
3. The Honey. Substitute pure maple syrup for a sweetness variation.
More Immunity Boosters for Hot Toddies
1. Ginger. High in antioxidants, vitamin C and zinc, ginger is a powerhouse during cold and flu season. Grate a little bit of fresh ginger into your tea while it’s brewing. Then, strain it out before enjoying your hot toddy. You could also use a ginger tea bag instead of a black tea bag.
2. Echinacea. Known for its antiviral and immunity-boosting properties, echinacea can be added in liquid form to your warm drink without affecting the flavor.
3. Cayenne pepper. Did you know that cayenne pepper is rich in vitamin C? Just a dash is all you’ll need spice up your cold winter nights with extra flavor.
