Equipment Needed
You’ll need a sandwich sealer if you want to do this right. There are several options on Amazon, all for around $10.
The one I recommend is linked here.
Ingredients
- Sandwich bread. For the true Uncrustable experience, go for plain white bread.
- Fruit jam. Strawberry and grape are fan favorites.
- Creamy peanut butter

How to Make Homemade Uncrustables
Divide the jam between four slices of bread. Spread it around but not all the way to the edges of the bread. Be sure to leave a perimeter.
Then, spread the peanut butter onto the other four slices of bread.
Form the PB&J sandwiches, and use the cutter part of the Uncrustables maker to press down and remove the crusts.
Now, carefully flip the sandwich over while still in the cutter. Align the arrows of the sealer and cutter parts and press the sealer down firmly. I like to hold the sealer down for about 15 seconds to make sure it really connects.
Then, gently remove the sandwich from the Uncrustable maker.

Variations
Nut-Free Uncrustables
Replace peanut butter with sunflower seed butter for a nut-free option. This is a great choice for a school lunch room where nuts may not be allowed.
Almond Butter and Jelly
Almond butter makes a delicious alternative to peanut butter and pairs well with many flavors of fruit jam.
Nutella Uncrustables
For a fun treat, make Nutella Uncrustables. Simply swap out the peanut butter and use Nutella instead. You could also leave out the jam too!
Banana and Peanut Butter
Replace the jelly with a few thin banana slices. They go great with peanut butter!
Cream Cheese and Jelly
Cream cheese makes a yummy alternative to peanut butter. Pair it with strawberry or raspberry jam for a delicious sweet sandwich that gives cheesecake vibes.
Fluffernutter
Spread peanut butter on one slice of bread and marshmallow fluff on the other for a fun fluffernutter-style sandwich.
Savory Uncrustables
Try deli meats with sharp cheddar cheese for a fun savory option that kids love. Turkey and cheese or ham and cheese make easy lunches.

Storage Instructions
Store homemade Uncrustables in the refrigerator or freezer, depending on how long you want to store them.
For short term storage, keep them sealed in an airtight container in the fridge.
For longer storage, they freeze beautifully. Simply wrap them in plastic wrap and place them into a larger freezer bag or airtight container. You could also put them into individual sandwich bags, but still keep them in a larger freezer bag for extra protection.
Pop a frozen Uncrustable into your kid’s lunchbox and it will be defrosted by lunch time!

Do Homemade Uncrustables Freeze Well?
Yes! Homemade Uncrustables freeze very well, which is one of the biggest reasons we love making them.
They’re especially convenient when you make a large batch at once. Store them in a freezer-safe bag or container and simply take one out whenever you need an easy lunch.

What Bread Is Best for Homemade Uncrustables?
The best bread is soft sandwich bread that is sturdy enough to hold the filling without tearing when you press the sandwich.
Classic white bread, like Wonder Bread, is a popular choice because it is soft and easy to seal. For a little extra nutrition, go with whole wheat bread or multigrain bread.
Gluten-free bread can be used, too, although some varieties are more fragile than traditional sandwich bread. Look for a soft, flexible loaf rather than a dense or crusty kind of bread.

How Do You Thaw a Homemade Uncrustable Sandwich?
The easiest way to thaw a homemade Uncrustable is to take it out of the freezer in the morning and place it in your child’s lunch box. It should thaw naturally to room temperature by lunch time.
You can also thaw it overnight in the refrigerator.
