These easy homemade 2 ingredient tortillas are a simple upgrade that you can make to your Mexican home cooking that will take your game to the next level!

When you taste the difference between homemade tortillas and store bought tortillas for the first time, you won’t believe your taste buds.
And when you realize how easy it is to make soft, pliable tortillas at home, it’ll be hard to go back. Taco night will never be the same!

Ingredients for 2 Ingredient Tortillas
Here are the simple ingredients you’ll need to make this flour tortilla recipe:
- Self-rising flour. It’s all-purpose flour that already has baking powder and salt added to it. The salt provides a little flavor and the baking powder acts as a leavening agent to yield the most pliable tortillas.
- Butter
That’s it! Oh, and we’re adding some hot water. And that’s really all there is to this easy recipe.
How to Make 2 Ingredient Tortillas
Prepare the Tortilla Dough
Make the dough by combining the flour, butter and warm water in a large bowl.
Then, knead the dough for a few minutes until you have a nice soft ball.
Now, cover the dough ball with a dish towel and let it rest for 10 minutes.

Form the Tortillas
Take your tortilla dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Now, let’s make our tortillas.
There are two ways to do this:
1. Use a tortilla press: A tortilla press is an inexpensive kitchen tool that will give you thin tortillas of uniform size and thickness without requiring much work out of you at all.
We love our tortilla press and use it often, but I didn’t use it to make the tortillas you see in these photos because I wanted you to see that a good old rolling pin works just fine!
2. Use a rolling pin: If using a rolling pin, start with a ball of dough and roll out from the center of the ball towards the edges. When you get to the edge, lift the rolling pin up, place it back in the center and roll it out towards the edge again.
Do this in all directions, and you should get a rough circle. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just get it as thin as you can!

Cook the Tortillas
Now, heat a nonstick skillet over low or medium-low heat.
Many recipes call for higher heat, but if you want really soft, pliable tortillas, I recommend not using a super hot skillet.
The tortillas will cook quickly and you don’t want them to brown too much.
Place each tortilla into the non-stick skillet, let it cook for about 1 minute, then flip it and cook it for another 30 seconds or so.
Stack your cooked tortillas on a plate until you’re ready to enjoy them.

See the recipe card below for full instructions.
How to Serve Homemade Tortillas
There are endless ways to use these soft flour tortillas! Here are some of my favorite ways:
1. Use homemade flour tortillas in all of your favorite Mexican-inspired dishes like tacos, burritos, quesadillas and enchiladas.
2. Make homemade tortilla chips by cutting your tortillas into triangles and frying them in oil.
3. Ditch the sandwich bread and make lunch using a homemade tortilla wrap! Fill the tortilla with deli meats or salads along with crisp lettuce for a refreshing lunch.
4. Build a breakfast tortilla with eggs, bacon, cheese and more!
5. Spread cream cheese, smoked salmon and chives onto a tortilla, roll it up and slice it into pinwheels for an elegant appetizer.

Can you make Homemade Tortillas Ahead of Time?
You can definitely make these homemade tortillas ahead of time!
The key is to not let them dry out. So, keep them covered with a clean dish towel or plastic wrap until you’re ready to enjoy them.
If you’re making them a day or more in advance, store them, tightly covered, in the refrigerator.
When you’re ready to use your tortillas, give them a quick zap in the microwave for 10-15 seconds to restore their flexible texture.

How to Store Homemade Tortillas
For best results, store leftover tortillas in an airtight container or wrapped tightly in plastic wrap. They will stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to one week.
Another option is to freeze leftover tortillas. Wrap them tightly in plastic wrap and place them into a freezer bag. Squeeze as much air out of the freezer bag as possible.
The next time you want to enjoy your homemade tortillas, let them thaw at room temperature and pop them into the microwave for 10-15 seconds. This should make them soft and pliable again.

Easy 2 Ingredient Flour Tortillas (Homemade Recipe)
Ingredients
- 3 cups self rising flour
- 5 Tbsp. unsalted butter room temperature
- 1 cup hot water
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl and stir well using a wooden spoon. Dump the mixture out onto a work surface and knead until you have a smooth dough. Form the dough into a ball.
- Cover the dough ball with a dish towel. Let it rest for 10 minutes.
- Uncover the dough. Divide dough into 12 equal parts. (For extra large tortillas, divide the dough into 8 equal parts.) Keep the dough covered with a clean kitchen towel while you work.
- Coat a 10" non-stick pan with cooking spray or a thin layer of extra virgin olive oil. Set the pan over low heat.
- Using a rolling pin, roll out a piece of dough as flat as possible. Place the tortilla into the pan and cook for 30-60 seconds. Flip gently and cook for another 30 seconds. Remove from the pan onto a separate plate.
- Repeat the process with the remaining pieces of dough. Stack the tortillas on top of each other to rest. Serve warm or at room temperature.
I only use self-rising flour, so happy I found your easy 2 ingredient Flour Tortilla recipe. I love tortillas but always failed when I made them using the traditional recipe. Does it make a difference if I melt the butter or should it be room temperature per your recipe? Thank you! When I read that you don’t have recipes using beef or pork, I also don’t consume beef or pork. I only eat chicken (I do struggle with that but, oh well!)
Hi Barbara,
I recommend using room temperature butter, as per the recipe, in order to yield the right consistency for the tortillas.
I also hope you find some chicken and turkey recipes to try on the blog, I’d love your feedback! 🙂
