How to Make Crack Green Beans
Blanch the Green Beans
Blanching is a technique where veggies are put into boiling water for a few minutes and then immediately plunged into ice water.
Blanching the green beans helps them to retain their bright, beautiful color instead of turning dull. It also cooks the beans just enough for them to be perfectly tender in the finished dish.
Cook the Bacon
Dicing the bacon before you fry it helps it cook even faster. Cook the diced bacon in a frying pan until it’s nice and crispy, then remove it onto a paper towel-lined plate.
Combine the Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the green beans and bacon with the remaining ingredients. Then, transfer it all to a baking dish.
Bake the Green Beans
Bake the green beans for about 30 minutes. Then, they’re ready to enjoy!

Why Are They Called Crack Green Beans?
Crack green beans get their fun nickname because they’re considered so delicious and addictive that it’s hard to stop eating them!
The brown sugar caramelizes around the beans, while the bacon adds a smoky, salty bite that makes every forkful irresistible.
There is a good reason this recipe has become popular at potlucks and holiday dinners. It takes an everyday vegetable and transforms it into a flavorful green bean dish that pairs beautifully with everything from roasted turkey to grilled pork chops.

Storage Instructions
Allow the crack green beans to cool to room temperature, then transfer them to an airtight container. They’ll stay fresh in the fridge for up to 4 days.
The best way to reheat them is in a pan on the stove or in a warm oven. In a pinch, the microwave also works.
For longer storage, you can freeze leftover crack beans, although they may lose some of their texture after thawing and become a lot softer.

Pro Tips
- Balance the seasonings: Garlic powder and onion powder add depth to the savory sauce. Freshly ground black pepper balances the sweetness, while a pinch of red pepper flakes adds a little heat. You can also add a small splash of maple syrup for a deeper caramel flavor.
- Drain canned beans well: If you’re using canned green beans, drain the beans thoroughly and lay them out on paper towels to remove excess liquid. Too much moisture can dilute the savory glaze and prevent it from coating the green beans properly.
- Watch the cooking time: The cook time will depend on whether you use fresh or canned beans. Fresh green beans generally need longer to become tender, while canned beans are already cooked and need only enough time to heat through and absorb the sauce.
- Don’t overcook the bacon: If you prefer crispy bacon, cook it separately and sprinkle the cooked bacon over the beans near the end of baking. This helps preserve its texture.
- Customize the flavor: For a different twist, substitute turkey bacon, use coconut aminos in place of soy sauce, or add a little Parmesan cheese just before serving.
- Make it your own: If you love southern smothered green beans, you can add diced onion or a little extra seasoning for a heartier side.

Are Crack Green Beans Gluten Free?
Most of the ingredients in crack green beans are naturally gluten free except for the soy sauce.
This can easily be substituted with gluten free soy sauce, tamari or liquid amino acids. You should also check the label of your Worcestershire sauce to confirm that it’s gluten free.
Can You Make This Recipe with Canned Green Beans?
You can. In fact, most traditional recipes for crack green beans call for canned beans. I personally have an aversion to canned green beans (probably from eating way too many of them in childhood), so I wrote this recipe for fresh green beans.
Canned green beans are already cooked, so you can skip the initial blanching step and focus on adding the brown sugar glaze.
For the best results, drain the canned beans thoroughly and gently pat them dry if needed. Arrange the drained green beans in a casserole dish, then pour the prepared sauce over them. Toss gently to coat the beans without breaking them apart.
Since canned beans are already tender, they generally require less time in the oven than fresh beans. Check them periodically to prevent them from becoming too soft.
