What is a butter board?
By now, you’re living under a rock if you haven’t heard about the TikTok and Instagram viral trend called butter boards. This social media trend has taken on a life of its own at this point.
A butter board is, quite literally, butter that’s been artfully smeared onto a cutting board or serving board and served with dippers like breads, fruits and vegetables.
The butter board trend started with plain old butter and has now morphed into cream cheese, flavored butters and even sweet versions with mascarpone cheese.
Toppings for butter boards can be sweet or savory and range from honey and pesto sauce to fruits, vegetables, fresh herbs and nuts. Dippers can be simple toasted baguettes, crackers, breads, raw veggies and in this case – cookies.
The options are only as limited as your creativity!
There are butter board ideas for every occasion. A brunch butter board with bagels and cream cheese, a holiday butter board with smoked salmon and caviar, a savory butter board with pesto sauce and roasted tomatoes.
But of all the butter board ideas out there, I’d challenge you to find one that’s more fun and festive than this Halloween butter board, loaded with all of your favorite candies!
How to build this Dessert Butter Board with Peanut Butter and Candy
This sweet butter board is my favorite of all the dessert butter boards, and definitely the most popular one on the blog. Here is what you’ll need:
Use a marble, slate or wooden cutting board as your canvas. Smear that peanut butter to your heart’s content. You can use the back of a spoon, a butter knife or a flexible spatula to create pretty swirls of peanut butter.
Chop the candy into small pieces and sprinkle the pieces over the peanut butter. Do the same with the M&Ms.
Then, arrange the cookies all around the peanut butter and dig in!
Variations on this Dessert Butter Board
The best thing about this latest food trend is that there are endless ways to customize it. Here are some fun ways to experiment with this dessert board:
1. The nutty base. Using Nutella or another kind of hazelnut spread, almond butter or cashew butter are all great alternatives to traditional peanut butter.
2. The dippers. Anything goes here! Try mini pretzels, graham crackers or even Biscoff cookies for dipping. You could even add your favorite bread (a sweeter bread like challah would be amazing), cut into triangles.
3. Give it a healthy twist. Adding fresh fruit like apple wedges, strawberries and bananas is a great way to offer alternatives to candy.
4. Crazy for candy. Create a new board every time by changing the candies you use! Try gummy bears, chocolate chips, Swedish fish and more.
5. Make a PB&J board. Swirl some berry jam or even a drizzle of honey through the peanut butter for a sweet and pretty design.
